As Rufo told New York Times columnist Michelle Goldberg, his goal \u2014 and the goal of several other DeSantis appointees to the New College of Florida\u2019s board \u2014 is to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/01\/09\/opinion\/chris-rufo-florida-ron-desantis.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">transform New College, a liberal bastion in the South, into something more like Hillsdale College<\/a>, a conservative school in Michigan with close ties to former President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The one positive thing that can be said about this appointment is that it is, at least, legal \u2014 something that cannot be said about many of the governor\u2019s attempts to sic the government on institutions he deems too liberal. DeSantis isn\u2019t just determined to use his public office to suppress dissenting voices and promote his own reactionary views; he\u2019s also quite willing to thumb his nose at the Constitution in order to do so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Indeed, DeSantis often seems to revel in his contempt for the First Amendment, even fundraising off of it. Shortly before DeSantis signed&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/23036427\/ron-desantis-disney-first-amendment-constitution-supreme-court\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">unconstitutional legislation<\/a>&nbsp;punishing the Walt Disney Company for criticizing one of his policies, the governor sent a fundraising email to supporters touting the fact that he was doing so. The company, DeSantis said, was being punished after it \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/04\/21\/business\/disney-florida-special-tax-status.html?smid=tw-nytimes&amp;smtyp=cur\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tried to attack me to advance their woke agenda<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DeSantis signed legislation&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/s3.documentcloud.org\/documents\/23310524\/doc-044-order-granting-mot-for-prelim-inj.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">imposing speech codes on university professors<\/a>, as well as legislation attempting to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/media.ca11.uscourts.gov\/opinions\/pub\/files\/202112355.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">seize control of content moderation<\/a>&nbsp;at sites such as YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook. He attacks classroom teachers with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/2022\/3\/15\/22976868\/dont-say-gay-florida-unconstitutional-ron-desantis-supreme-court-first-amendment-schools-parents\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">vague, unconstitutional laws stigmatizing LGBTQ people<\/a>. His administration&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wsvn.com\/news\/local\/miami-dade\/gov-ron-desantis-to-investigate-christmas-drag-shows-held-in-fort-lauderdale-and-miami\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">threatens drag performers with criminal charges<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In his victory speech shortly after winning reelection in his increasingly conservative state, DeSantis pledged to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rev.com\/blog\/transcripts\/ron-desantis-gives-victory-speech-after-re-election-as-florida-governor-transcript\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cfight the woke in the legislature,\u201d \u201cfight the woke in the schools,\u201d and to \u201cfight the woke in the corporations.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of his lawyers later clarified that the word \u201cwoke\u201d means \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2022\/12\/05\/desantis-florida-woke-critical-race-theory\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the belief there are systemic injustices in American society and the need to address them<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a constitutional matter, a governor is allowed to give speeches arguing that the United States is somehow miraculously immune from systemic injustice. He may sign legislation repealing programs intended to cure these injustices. He may appoint officials to public school boards that share his belief that the US is immune to these injustices. And he may even enact policies that help perpetuate these injustices, assuming that those policies violate neither the state nor federal constitution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But DeSantis goes much further. He wields the government\u2019s sovereign powers to sanction speech he does not like, and to punish institutions that criticize him. DeSantis, in other words, does not seem content to simply enact policies that hew to a right-wing economic or social vision. He wishes to use the sovereign powers of government to shape public discourse itself \u2014 punishing some ideas, rewarding others, and conscripting public schools and universities into his culture war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To be fair, DeSantis is hardly unique among Republican state governors in this regard \u2014 Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R), for example, signed legislation targeting social media companies that is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/2022\/5\/31\/23149183\/supreme-court-texas-social-media-ruling-netchoice-paxton\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">even more aggressive than Florida\u2019s<\/a>.
