Then he came out in favor of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/politics\/biden-upends-precedent-in-backing-gop-resolution-to-block-d-c-crime-law\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">blocking a Washington, D.C., law<\/a>&nbsp;that would have reduced the penalties for certain crimes. Finally, he approved a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/03\/13\/politics\/willow-project-alaska-oil-biden-approval-climate\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">massive new oil drilling project in Alaska<\/a>&nbsp;that\u2019s ardently opposed by environmentalists. So today we\u2019re asking the question that a lot of progressive Democrats are asking themselves too: What\u2019s the deal with Biden\u2019s move to the center?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I can\u2019t read Biden\u2019s mind, but I suspect he\u2019s doing this to improve his chances in the 2024 election. Biden hasn\u2019t yet officially announced his reelection campaign, but moves like this leave little doubt that he\u2019s running again. His approval rating is around 44 percent, according to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/projects.fivethirtyeight.com\/biden-approval-rating\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">FiveThirtyEight\u2019s average<\/a>.
