{"id":10922,"date":"2023-06-12T11:41:00","date_gmt":"2023-06-12T11:41:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lonecandle.com\/?p=10922"},"modified":"2023-06-12T11:41:00","modified_gmt":"2023-06-12T11:41:00","slug":"in-red-states-gun-reform-means-making-it-easier-to-buy-and-carry-guns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lonecandle.com\/?p=10922","title":{"rendered":"In Red States, \u2018Gun Reform\u2019 Means Making It Easier To Buy And Carry Guns"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>\n\n&#8220;One of the most common types of new laws this year are those that allow handgun owners to carry a concealed gun without a permit.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox13news.com\/news\/agriculture-commissioner-encourages-floridians-to-carry-concealed-with-a-permit\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Florida<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wowt.com\/2023\/04\/25\/live-1-pm-gov-pillen-sign-permitless-conceal-carry-bill\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nebraska<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/news\/best-states\/south-carolina\/articles\/2023-02-22\/south-carolina-house-oks-permitless-carry-of-handguns#:~:text=%7C-,Feb.,2023%2C%20at%205%3A50%20p.m.&amp;text=COLUMBIA%2C%20S.C.%20(AP)%20%E2%80%94,concealed%20without%20a%20state%20permit.\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">South Carolina<\/a>&nbsp;have passed such laws, joining&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/giffords.org\/lawcenter\/gun-laws\/policy-areas\/guns-in-public\/concealed-carry\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">23 other states that have passed permitless concealed carry<\/a>&nbsp;since 2010. North Carolina advanced a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/myfox8.com\/news\/north-carolina\/north-carolinas-no-permit-concealed-carry-bill-dropped-before-vote-in-nc-hous\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">similar law<\/a>&nbsp;that was shelved earlier this month, but the state legislature did repeal a law that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/pistol-permit-veto-override-north-carolina-b9d0ee55bf658ca72043bd3f706b128f\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">required a permit to buy a handgun<\/a>, overriding the Democratic governor\u2019s veto.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other states have considered expanding the areas in which concealed weapons can be carried. In Mississippi, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mississippifreepress.org\/25899\/mississippi-education-board-votes-to-allow-guns-in-k-12-schools-for-educators\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">state Board of Education implemented a policy last year<\/a>&nbsp;to comply with a decade-old law that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/mississippitoday.org\/2022\/07\/21\/mississippi-guns-in-schools-2012\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">allowed guns in K-12 schools<\/a>. In&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/campus-carry-guns-west-virginia-college-c3f9781ea0c761ada055d3d8fd2b40db\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">West Virginia<\/a>, guns are now allowed on public college and university campuses, a similar law to one&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wbir.com\/article\/news\/politics\/tennessee-college-guns-bill\/51-1c37946a-5631-4a53-a3a4-80f56d78d008\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tennessee<\/a>&nbsp;considered. The Iowa state House passed a bill allowing legal gun owners&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.desmoinesregister.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2023\/04\/13\/house-bill-would-expand-where-iowans-could-bring-guns-to-include-school-parking-lots\/70107277007\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">to keep a weapon in their car on public grounds<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegazette.com\/government-politics\/what-the-house-passed-gun-bill-would-do-in-iowa\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">decriminalized the carry of concealed weapons<\/a>&nbsp;for certain people, like those deemed a danger to themselves or others. The Missouri House&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kctv5.com\/2023\/04\/20\/missouri-house-passes-bill-allowing-concealed-carry-places-worship-public-transportation\/#:~:text=PowerNation-,Missouri%20House%20passes%20bill%20allowing%20concealed%20carry,of%20worship%2C%20on%20public%20transportation&amp;text=KANSAS%20CITY%2C%20Mo.,the%20bill%20earlier%20this%20week.\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">advanced a law allowing guns<\/a>&nbsp;in places of worship and on public transportation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of these gun-rights expansions are also geared toward schools. After the Uvalde, Texas, school shooting that killed 19 children and two teachers, the Republican Party promoted&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.12newsnow.com\/article\/news\/local\/uvalde-mass-shooting-reignites-armed-teachers-debate\/502-2245e141-aa2b-4834-8ab1-23167090b89a\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">arming teachers as a way to increase school safety<\/a>, and states have since begun passing laws allowing it. Last year,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wlwt.com\/article\/ohio-law-school-staff-armed-required-training-house-bill-99\/41168235#:~:text=HOUSE%20BILL%2099%20IS%20A,700%20HOURS%20TO%20JUST%2024.\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ohio<\/a>&nbsp;passed a law allowing teachers to be armed after 24 hours of training (down from 700 hours); this year,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/mississippitoday.org\/2023\/02\/09\/armed-teachers-senate-bill\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mississippi<\/a>&nbsp;passed a bill that would create a program to arm teachers, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.koco.com\/article\/oklahoma-lawmakers-bill-teachers-firearms\/43378997#:~:text=OKLAHOMA%20CITY%20%E2%80%94,is%20a%20concealed%20carry%20permit.\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Oklahoma<\/a>&nbsp;has considered one similar to Ohio\u2019s, though its legislative session is almost over.
