It shouldn&#8217;t be so hard or time-consuming, they argue, for a law-abiding foreigner simply to wait his turn to get a green card.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/reason.com\/2023\/06\/15\/the-vast-majority-of-people-who-want-to-immigrate-to-the-u-s-have-no-legal-option\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reality<\/a>&nbsp;of the U.S. immigration system is much more&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cato.org\/policy-analysis\/why-legal-immigration-nearly-impossible\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">complicated and costly<\/a>&nbsp;than that. To that effect, the Cato Institute, a free market think tank, has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegreencardgame.com\/factor\/welcome\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">released<\/a>&nbsp;<em>The Green Card Game<\/em>. Players must navigate the game&#8217;s twists and turns in the hopes of securing a green card, which will allow them to live and work in the U.S. legally and eventually become a citizen.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Round after round, different background after different background, I was unable to get into the country legally. I never even came close to the citizenship test. At one point, as a highly educated Afghan doctor fleeing religious persecution, I had no choice but to spend thousands on a journey from South America to the U.S.-Mexico border. My arrival date ticked up to 2045\u2014only for a judge to reject my asylum case. (Unfortunately, that exact journey is a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/asia-pacific\/hundreds-afghans-risk-11-country-trek-seek-haven-united-states-2023-02-01\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reality<\/a>&nbsp;for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/theworld.org\/stories\/2023-05-17\/afghan-families-traverse-most-latin-america-seek-asylum-us-border\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">many<\/a>.)&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;&#8221;A lot of people might play and conclude that the game is biased,&#8221; says Bier. &#8220;But the reality is that the game is easier than real life.
