When&nbsp;<em>The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time<\/em>&nbsp;was released in 1998, it&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/christmas.musetechnical.com\/ShowCatalogPage\/1998-Sears-Christmas-Book\/0162\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cost $69.99<\/a>&nbsp;to order through the Sears catalog. Another Zelda game,&nbsp;<em>Tears of the Kingdom<\/em>, was released this year\u201425 years later\u2014and it&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/zelda-tears-of-the-kingdom-price-tag-worth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">retailed for $70<\/a>. That actually made it one of the most expensive games of the year, since most new Nintendo games these days sell for about $60.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/data\/inflation_calculator.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">math<\/a>. If Zelda games had kept pace with inflation, the new one should have cost about $130 today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sure, games today achieve some cost-savings because they&#8217;re digital downloads. That means production companies like Nintendo don&#8217;t have to pay for a physical game cartridge or CD-ROM, packaging, or shipping. But games today are also far, far more advanced than anything you could have bought for&nbsp;<em>any&nbsp;<\/em>amount of money a quarter-century ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s not just video games that have defied inflation&#8217;s steady creep. Toys in general are&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jmhorp\/status\/1459519388781056006\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">less expensive today<\/a>, even before adjusting for inflation, than they were a few decades ago. That&#8217;s despite the fact that wages have grown significantly over the same period of time. The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/fred.stlouisfed.org\/series\/AHETPI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">average worker in the United States made<\/a>&nbsp;about $13 an hour in December 1998, compared to about $29 dollar per hour now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is true over longer periods of time too. As&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/reason.com\/2023\/08\/12\/barbie-girls-now-live-in-a-much-wealthier-barbie-world\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">I wrote earlier this year<\/a>, the amount of work necessary to buy a single new Barbie has fallen quite a bit since the doll was introduced.
