These are the sorts of conservatives&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/policy-and-politics\/2022\/4\/28\/23037788\/ron-desantis-florida-viktor-orban-hungary-right-authoritarian\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">who look admiringly at Hungarian autocrat Viktor Orb\u00e1n<\/a>, seeing his use of legalistic arcana to crush liberal opposition as a model for how to fight a culture war and win.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Obviously, most Republican voters aren\u2019t this hyper-ideological. But DeSantis and his allies theorized that the \u201cTrump but competent\u201d shtick would allow them to pull from all sides of the GOP electorate. By focusing on his \u201cculture warrior\u201d background \u2014 like his fights over Covid restrictions and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/23691467\/ron-desantis-disney-what-you-need-to-know\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Disney<\/a>&nbsp;\u2014 DeSantis could win over a key portion of the Republican base. By seeming more competent and organized, he could scan as palatable to the traditional establishment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Except it turned out that the kind of culture war politics DeSantis offered, an often-abstract assault on \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/culture\/21437879\/stay-woke-wokeness-history-origin-evolution-controversy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wokeness<\/a>,\u201d paled in comparison to what Trump served up. The MAGA base wanted Trump and all his hard edges: the bigoted rhetoric and all-consuming post-2020 election anger. The rump establishment bloc preferred&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/policy-and-politics\/2023\/2\/14\/23599194\/nikki-haley-donald-trump-2024-presidential-campaign\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nikki Haley<\/a>, sticking DeSantis in no-man\u2019s land. His campaign was appealing to a small niche of highly intellectual populist conservatives, but that proved to be just about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The MAGA faithful didn\u2019t want a pseudo-Trump gussied up for the GOP\u2019s elite.
