Authorities reported a record-low turnout of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2024\/mar\/01\/iran-election-extended-by-two-hours-with-turnout-at-just-27\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">27 percent<\/a>, even after they extended voting for an additional two hours, amidst widespread disillusionment and calls for an election boycott.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The country had suffered&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/reason.com\/2022\/10\/21\/iran-tries-to-coopt-and-crush-feminists-at-the-same-time\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">months of unrest<\/a>&nbsp;following the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2023\/09\/what-happened-to-mahsa-zhina-amini\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">death of Mahsa Amini,<\/a>&nbsp;who was arrested for not complying with the country&#8217;s mandatory hijab rule in September 2022<strong>.<\/strong>&nbsp;Although the streets have calmed down, it was the most significant challenge to the Islamic Republic yet.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Since the 1979 revolution, Iran has had a mix of democratic and theocratic institutions.
