But I bet you wish you could.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"m_3437375409851203977gmail-n77YEw\">A small hatchback around the size of a Mini Cooper,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cleantechnica.com\/2023\/04\/30\/the-byd-seagull-and-the-promise-of-the-ev-revolution\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the Seagull<\/a>&nbsp;is a fast-charging electric car and claims a range of up to 250 miles (at least according to its home country\u2019s generous tests); BYD, its Chinese manufacturer, claims it can go from 30 percent to 80 percent charged in a half-hour using a DC plug. It\u2019s hardly a luxury car but it\u2019s well-equipped, with a power driver\u2019s seat and cruise control. \u201cIf I were looking for an inexpensive commuter car \u2026 this would be perfect,\u201d veteran car journalist&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=izvdO-zdlKg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">John McElroy said<\/a>&nbsp;after taking a drive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"m_3437375409851203977gmail-QHbqtC\">The best part? Its base model&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cleantechnica.com\/2023\/04\/29\/byd-unleashes-the-seagull-in-china-and-its-cheaper-than-a-petrol-powered-honda-fit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">costs about $10,700<\/a>&nbsp;in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/china\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">China<\/a>. That\u2019s about a third of the cost of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.caranddriver.com\/features\/g40605495\/cheapest-electric-cars\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cheapest EV<\/a>&nbsp;you&nbsp;<em>can<\/em>&nbsp;buy in the US. In&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2024\/02\/13\/byd-launches-cheapest-ev-south-america-20k\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">South America<\/a>, it\u2019s a little pricier, but still fairly affordable, at under $24,000 for a top-trim version. Even in Europe, you can get an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/news\/673128\/byd-dolphin-launches-in-europe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">entry-level BYD for under \u20ac30,000<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"m_3437375409851203977gmail-6E0cLO\">These are absolutely screaming deals \u2014 exactly the kind of products that could turbocharge our transition away from gas and toward&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/electric-vehicles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">electric vehicles<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"m_3437375409851203977gmail-jIDDEz\">And it\u2019s just one of many BYD electric cars on offer, from the compact&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.arenaev.com\/15000_byd_e2_comes_with_405_km_of_range_and_2_years_of_free_internet-news-1650.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">e2<\/a>\/<a href=\"https:\/\/ev.motorwatt.com\/ev-database\/database-electric-cars\/byd-e3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">e3<\/a>&nbsp;hatchback and sedan (think a Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla) to the full-size, luxe&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.byd.com\/us\/car\/han-ev\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Han EV<\/a>, a more expensive option nonetheless&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.byd.com\/news\/byds-flagship-han-ev-series-officially-goes-on-sale\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">selling for under $33,000<\/a>&nbsp;in China (it costs&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ev-database.org\/car\/1784\/BYD-HAN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">more than double that<\/a>&nbsp;in Europe). Many of the options have an aquatic themed name: the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.byd.com\/eu\/car\/seal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Seal<\/a>, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.byd.com\/eu\/car\/dolphin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dolphin<\/a>, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2024\/01\/16\/byd-sea-lion-07-specs-revealed-tesla-model-y\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sea Lion<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"m_3437375409851203977gmail-72YwpD\">The problem for Americans? They\u2019ve seen what\u2019s happened in other global markets that Chinese EV companies have entered. Shipments to Europe have&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2023\/12\/28\/1222056330\/chinese-carmakers-flood-the-european-market-with-electric-vehicles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">increased astronomically<\/a>; Chinese companies sold 0.5 percent of EVs in Europe in 2019 but they\u2019re already&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlanticcouncil.org\/blogs\/new-atlanticist\/china-has-become-an-electric-vehicle-export-behemoth-how-should-the-us-and-eu-respond\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">over 9 percent<\/a>&nbsp;as of last year.
