And he\u2019s interested in testing out proposals he didn\u2019t get to last term, such as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/politics\/2024\/1\/21\/24044381\/trump-attacks-nikki-haley-birthright-citizenship\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">severely limiting birthright citizenship<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"m_-5372756169852935464gmail-4Fabgu\">Essentially, Trump\u2019s second-term&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/immigration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">immigration policy<\/a>&nbsp;is shaping up to be much like his first, but even harsher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"m_-5372756169852935464gmail-FFUeHw\">Take Trump\u2019s proposal for a new&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/2018\/4\/27\/17284798\/travel-ban-scotus-countries-protests\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">travel ban<\/a>, a policy imposed during his first term: \u201cWhen I return to office, [it\u2019s] coming back even bigger than before and much stronger than before,\u201d&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/trump-bring-back-travel-ban-muslim-countries\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Trump said in a July 2023 speech<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"m_-5372756169852935464gmail-GMUzGL\">That 2016 ban temporarily barred travelers from seven Muslim-majority countries from entering the US before it was struck down by the courts (only&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/policy-and-politics\/2017\/6\/26\/15873722\/muslim-ban-supreme-court-who-included\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">to return in updated form<\/a>). On his first day in office,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrw.org\/news\/2021\/01\/20\/day-one-us-president-biden-reverses-odious-travel-ban\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">President Joe Biden rescinded the ban<\/a>. This time around, Trump is weighing expanding this ban to encompass people from even more places, including&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/politics\/politics-features\/donald-trump-muslim-ban-immigration-2024-1234730150\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Afghanistan<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/donald-trump\/trump-vows-expand-travel-ban-gaza-rcna120711\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gaza<\/a>, and to bar those who express&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/donald-trump\/trump-alien-enemies-act-travel-ban-deport-drug-dealers-gang-members-rcna108121\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201ccommunist\u201d and \u201cMarxist\u201d views<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"m_-5372756169852935464gmail-mgCLNl\">Much of what\u2019s driving Trump\u2019s hardline immigration policies is how they&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/538\/immigration-driving-support-gop-primary\/story?id=106777173\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">resonate<\/a>&nbsp;with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/fox-news-voter-analysis-immigration-issues-republicans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Republican base voters<\/a>, including those who subscribe to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/cbs-news-analysis-most-republicans-agree-with-poisoning-the-blood-language\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">xenophobic ideas<\/a>&nbsp;of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/08\/03\/1115175247\/talk-of-invasion-moves-from-the-fringe-to-the-mainstream-of-gop-immigration-mess\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">keeping migrants out<\/a>&nbsp;and economic claims about immigrants purportedly taking jobs or abusing benefits.
