The numbers started increasing dramatically in 2020, with pedestrian deaths reaching a 40-year high in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the intervening years, I\u2019ve learned a lot about the factors that make traffic fatality rates in the US&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/usa.streetsblog.org\/2018\/12\/13\/why-the-u-s-trails-the-developed-world-on-traffic-deaths\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">50 percent higher than they are in other comparable nations<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They include&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/23178764\/florida-us19-deadliest-pedestrian-fatality-crisis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dangerous road<\/a>&nbsp;design that makes it easy for drivers to speed, and a breakdown in traffic enforcement that allows some of the worst drivers&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/23880418\/traffic-safety-enforcement-tickets-rock-creek-crash\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">to get away with it for so long that they eventually kill someone<\/a>. I\u2019ve also reported how drivers in the US&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/24078289\/us-drivers-distracted-driving-cellphone-road-deaths-pedestrians\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">spend more time using their phones while driving<\/a>&nbsp;than people in other countries, and on survey data that seems to suggest that drivers in the United States&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cmtelematics.com\/distracted-driving\/drivers-are-nearly-3x-less-distracted-in-the-uk-why\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">have more lax attitudes toward road safety<\/a>&nbsp;than their European counterparts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But there\u2019s one thing I still can\u2019t understand.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why has the government failed to address the fact that large, heavy vehicles are deadlier to pedestrians and cyclists than smaller cars? There is actually a way to make cars safer for everyone&nbsp;\u2014 and it includes changing how the government rates a \u201csafe car.\u201d&nbsp; In Europe, government regulators test new vehicles to see how dangerous they are for pedestrians and cyclists and include that information in their safety ratings. They\u2019ve been doing it for years. The US does no such thing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those 5-star safety readings you see for cars? That rating is for people&nbsp;<em>inside&nbsp;<\/em>the car. So if you\u2019ve read the news about the soaring numbers of vulnerable people being killed on roads, and thought about purchasing something that would be safer for them, you aren\u2019t going to be able to find that information.
