I talked to more than 100 people for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/magazine\/2024\/04\/26\/susie-wiles-trump-desantis-profile-00149654\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the profile I wrote<\/a>&nbsp;earlier this year, and there\u2019s some disagreement about how exactly she does that. But there\u2019s no debate whatsoever about her constitutional allergy to the limelight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since Donald Trump became the dominant figure in American politics, nobody has been this important and this close to him in this role for this long. Nobody. That she\u2019s going to be his chief of staff is news in only the most technical sense \u2014 because in reality it\u2019s simply a continuation of what she\u2019s been to him for the last four years. And in 2016 and 2020, too, she helmed his Florida operation.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;She\u2019s in the past described herself as \u201ca moderate on the political spectrum\u201d but she talks as much about disposition as ideology. \u201cI come from a very traditional background. In my early career things like manners mattered and there was an expected level of decorum,\u201d she told me earlier this year. \u201cAnd so I get it that the GOP of today is different. There are changes we must live with in order to get done the things we\u2019re trying to do.\u201d There\u2019s certainly a way to see and study the evolution of the Republican Party over the last half-century through the lens of&nbsp;<em>her<\/em>&nbsp;long career. So what does she&nbsp;<em>believe<\/em>? She believes in working and working hard for the person she\u2019s working for. She believes in being valuable to the principal.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;There\u2019s a legitimate mutual respect. He listens to her. She brings to the rooms she\u2019s in with him a certain equanimity. They\u2019re in many ways very, very different, but they also recognize something in each other. She\u2019s smart, she\u2019s competitive, and she can be, in her own out-of-the-way, soft-spoken, \u201cwho, me?\u201d manner, pretty cutthroat. There\u2019s a yin-and-yang component to the two of them: Trump reads the stage directions \u2014 he\u2019s all text and no subtext \u2014 and she\u2019s essentially the utter opposite. I\u2019m tempted to say he needs her and he knows it. Maybe more to the point, though, they need each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She\u2019s clear-eyed about the terms of engagement. She doesn\u2019t control&nbsp;<em>him&nbsp;<\/em>\u2014 nobody controls&nbsp;<em>him&nbsp;<\/em>\u2014 and she doesn\u2019t try. But strategically, temperamentally, even psychologically, she can try to help him, advise him, guide him. And it doesn\u2019t work all the time \u2014 she very clearly hasn\u2019t made Trump someone or something he\u2019s not \u2014 but it can and does work some of the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m thinking here about something she once told me about her mother: \u201cShe woke up an optimist every day, and she started every day like that, and it would fall apart or it wouldn\u2019t \u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are multiple definitions of the word I\u2019m about to use and I think in her case they all apply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Susie manages.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;She\u2019s not&nbsp;<em>just<\/em>&nbsp;a calming presence. She\u2019s an experienced operator. And she\u2019s no stranger to the dark arts.
