Oil and gas account for the bulk of this increase in emissions, with coal a distant third. While greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere are rising, their output is level or falling from some of the largest historical emitters. The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/ip_24_5605\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">European Union\u2019s emissions are declining<\/a>.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/outlooks\/steo\/report\/total.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">US emissions<\/a>&nbsp;are holding steady. China, the world\u2019s largest greenhouse gas emitter, is on track to see its output grow by just&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.carbonbrief.org\/analysis-global-co2-emissions-will-reach-new-high-in-2024-despite-slower-growth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">0.2 percent this year<\/a>, one of the tiniest increases in years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bucking this trend are many developing countries like India, currently the world\u2019s third-largest emitter. India has seen a huge increase in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/india-gets-386-bln-financial-commitment-expand-renewable-capacity-2024-09-16\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">renewable energy deployment<\/a>, but its still developing energy from all sources, including fossil fuels. The Global Carbon Budget found India\u2019s fossil fuel emissions are on track to increase 4.6 percent this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are a few additional factors that drove up emissions this year. The lingering effects of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/climate\/24145756\/la-nina-2024-el-nino-heat-hurricane-record-temperature-pacific\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">El Ni\u00f1o<\/a>&nbsp;helped push global temperatures to record highs. Extraordinary heat waves in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/india-heatwave-deaths-heat-stroke-climate-change-880f26e3b8eeb066d2db2308502783d2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">India<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/china\/chinese-megacity-limits-outdoor-lighting-record-heat-strains-grid-2024-08-06\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">China<\/a>&nbsp;pushed up energy demand for cooling, and that meant burning more fossil fuels. \u201cWe\u2019re beginning to see some of those negative feedback loops where the climate crisis itself is impacting on the energy system and making it harder to reduce emissions,\u201d Grant said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still, there are glimmers of good news. More than 30 countries have already managed to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/future-perfect\/23447414\/degrowth-decoupling-carbon-emissions-economic-growth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">grow their economies while cutting carbon dioxide pollution<\/a>, a clear sign that coal, oil, and natural gas are not the only paths to prosperity.
