Then, the White House&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/articles\/2025\/05\/art-of-the-deal-u-s-china-ink-initial-trade-deal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">celebrated<\/a>&nbsp;the agreement that reduced those tariffs as &#8220;the art of the deal.&#8221; They are literally&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/EricBoehm87\/status\/1914870453102846324\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">doing the meme<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the &#8220;deal&#8221; means that imports from China will be subjected to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/JosephPolitano\/status\/1921915791483588837\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">significantly higher tariffs than when Trump took office<\/a>.&nbsp;Those tariffs will continue to be a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/joelgriffith\/status\/1921925989510127933\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">serious economic burden<\/a>&nbsp;for American businesses and consumers, and the threat of even higher tariffs remains\u2014because the &#8220;deal&#8221; only pauses those tariffs for 90 days, and because Trump&#8217;s mercurial nature means no one can really be sure what is coming next.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;the remaining 30 percent tariff, which is stacked on top of preexisting tariffs from Trump&#8217;s first term, &#8220;will still make for an expensive back to school and holiday season for most Americans,&#8221; Lamar said in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aafaglobal.org\/AAFA\/AAFA_News\/2025_Press_Releases\/Apparel_Footwear_Industry_Responds_US_China_Deescalation_Deal_Tariffs.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a statement<\/a>. &#8220;If freight rates spike due to the tariff-induced shipping disruptions\u2014which will take months to unwind\u2014we could see costs and prices creep up even further.&#8221;&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;both America and China are still worse off than they were a few months ago.
