Back in 2011, a now-dead American al-Qaeda operative, Adam Gadahn,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/slate.com\/news-and-politics\/2015\/12\/al-qaida-urged-followers-to-take-advantage-in-of-u-s-gun-laws-in-2011.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said as much<\/a>&nbsp;in a video to supporters&#8221;<br>&#8230;<br>&#8220;Every country is home to extremists and other hateful individuals. People of every country get into arguments and fights with friends, family, and peers. But in the US, it\u2019s much more likely that someone who\u2019s extreme, hateful, or otherwise angry is able to pull out a gun and kill someone \u2014 there are so many guns around and few barriers to obtaining the weapons.&#8221;&nbsp;<br>&#8230;<br>&#8220;The research, compiled by the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hsph.harvard.edu\/hicrc\/firearms-research\/guns-and-death\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Harvard School of Public Health\u2019s Injury Control Research Center<\/a>, is also pretty clear: After controlling for variables such as socioeconomic factors and other crime, places with more guns have more gun deaths. Researchers have found this to be true not only with&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vox.com\/policy-and-politics\/2015\/12\/8\/9870240\/gun-ownership-deaths-homicides\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">homicides<\/a>&nbsp;but also with&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vox.com\/2015\/6\/3\/8721267\/gun-suicide-gun-control\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">suicides<\/a>&#8221;&nbsp;<br>&#8230;<br>&#8220;the US is not an outlier when it comes to overall crime&#8221;<br>&#8230;<br>&#8220;Instead, the US appears to have more&nbsp;<em>lethal<\/em>&nbsp;violence specifically, driven in large part by the prevalence of guns.&#8221;&nbsp;<br>&#8230;<br>&#8220;Researchers have found that stricter gun laws could help. A 2016&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/epirev.oxfordjournals.org\/content\/38\/1\/140.abstract\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">review<\/a>&nbsp;of 130 studies in 10 countries, published in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/epirev.oxfordjournals.org\/content\/38\/1.toc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Epidemiologic Reviews<\/em><\/a><em>,<\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vox.com\/2016\/2\/29\/11120184\/gun-control-study-international-evidence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">found<\/a>&nbsp;that new legal restrictions on owning and purchasing guns tend to be followed by a drop in gun violence, a strong indicator that restricting access to guns can save lives. A&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/policy-and-politics\/2018\/3\/2\/17050610\/guns-shootings-studies-rand-charts-maps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">review of the US evidence<\/a>&nbsp;by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rand.org\/research\/gun-policy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">RAND<\/a>&nbsp;also linked some gun control measures, including background checks, to lower rates of injuries and deaths.
