Here\u2019s what\u2019s in it \u2014 and what\u2019s not."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>\n\n&#8220;This \u201cphase one\u201d deal,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/world\/2019\/12\/13\/21020444\/trump-china-trade-deal-phase-one-truce-tariffs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">which the US and China reached in December<\/a>, will cool trade tensions between two economic superpowers that have rattled the globe.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it stops short of the comprehensive trade and reform agreement the Trump administration wanted when it launched its trade war with China in 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, China has agreed to make purchases of about&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2020\/01\/13\/china-energy-manufactured-goods-trade-deal-098343\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$200 billion worth of US goods over a two-year period<\/a>, including almost doubling its agricultural purchases to $40 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>China also made concessions on intellectual property, currency, and access to financial services, and it\u2019s promised to halt the practice of forcing companies to turn over their technology,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ustr.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/US-China-Agreement-Fact-Sheet.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to the United States Trade Representative<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The US, in exchange, will call off and reduce some tariffs, though taxes on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2019\/12\/13\/trump-says-25percent-tariffs-will-remain-but-new-china-duties-will-not-take-effect-sunday.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$360 billion in Chinese goods<\/a>&nbsp;will stay in place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>President Donald Trump&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/china\/diplomacy\/article\/3045933\/phase-one-trade-deal-gives-donald-trump-bragging-rights-phase\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">is selling this deal as an enormous win<\/a>, but the administration did not get the structural changes to China\u2019s economy that it wanted, including tackling things like Beijing\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/economy\/initial-us-china-trade-deal-has-major-hole-beijings-massive-business-subsidies\/2019\/12\/30\/f4de4d14-22a3-11ea-86f3-3b5019d451db_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">huge subsidies to Chinese companies<\/a>.
