Same With Democrats."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>\n\n&#8220;Republicans on Capitol Hill are standing firmly behind Trump because&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/11\/11\/us\/politics\/republicans-trump-impeachment.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GOP voters<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.clubforgrowth.org\/club-for-growth-launches-television-ad-on-sen-romneys-support-of-democrats-impeachment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GOP activists and elites<\/a>&nbsp;are demanding that they do so. There just isn\u2019t much room to break with the president of your party if close to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/poll.qu.edu\/national\/release-detail?ReleaseID=3650\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">90 percent of voters in the party approve of him<\/a>&nbsp;and many of those voters get their&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediamatters.org\/fox-news\/why-fox-news-exists\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">news from sources strongly supportive of that president<\/a>.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why are Republican voters and elites so strongly aligned with Trump? There\u2019s not a simple answer, but I think identity \u2014 rather than ideology \u2014 is a big part of it. Trump is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/fivethirtyeight.com\/features\/the-identity-politics-of-the-trump-administration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">defending the identities of people who align themselves with the GOP<\/a>, and this is a more powerful connection and reason to back him than pure ideological concerns.
