They have created parallel institutions of their own, meant to support their factional interests. And they have relentlessly cast \u201clibs\u201d as an enemy within \u2014 an alien, hostile, and ultimately illegitimate force.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a result, a large faction of the country has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/splinternews.com\/the-long-lucrative-right-wing-grift-is-blowing-up-in-t-1793944216\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">descended into paranoia and conspiracy theories<\/a>, fighting intensely against the basic rules, norms, and post-war assumptions of American life. And because that faction has successfully rendered all political fights \u2014 even fights over basic facts \u2014 as vicious, zero-sum partisan struggles, another large faction of the country has simply tuned out, coming to regard politics and public life generally as corrupt and fruitless. Americans\u2019 trust in their institutions and in one another is at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2019\/07\/22\/key-findings-about-americans-declining-trust-in-government-and-each-other\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">record lows<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;it works against the left\u2019s purposes. The left needs for voters to believe that effective, responsive governance is possible \u2014 that we can, in fact, have nice things. The left needs social and political trust.
