If Trump received any bump from his handling of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/coronavirus-covid19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">coronavirus<\/a>&nbsp;outbreak, it was unusually small and short-lived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>International comparison is useful here. Leaders in most peer countries saw 10- to 20-point increases in their Morning Consult polling numbers by mid-April compared to a month earlier, when the World Health Organization declared Covid-19 a pandemic. Canada\u2019s Justin Trudeau has seen a 16-point bump; Scott Morrison of Australia a 25-point increase; even the largely unpopular French Prime Minister Emmanuel Macron has seen his job approval rise 10 points.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Democratic and Republican state governors across the US have seen big increases in popularity as well, upward of 15 points in various polls&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Why has Trump\u2019s approval bump been so small relative to most other leaders at home and abroad?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One theory is that the Trump administration\u2019s late and botched response to the coronavirus has dragged down the president\u2019s popularity. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/scri.siena.edu\/2020\/03\/30\/87-of-nyers-approve-of-cuomos-handling-of-the-coronavirus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">overall favorability is up 27 points<\/a>&nbsp;despite criticism for his&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/04\/08\/nyregion\/new-york-coronavirus-response-delays.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hesitance to push for more drastic measures<\/a>&nbsp;early in the crisis. The UK\u2019s Boris Johnson, who came under fire for his government\u2019s infamous&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/world\/2020\/3\/15\/21180414\/coronavirus-uk-herd-immunity-vallance-johnson\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cherd immunity\u201d strategy<\/a>&nbsp;in mid-March, has seen an 18-point bump. Voters might forgive an initial display of incompetence in the face of a novel threat if their leaders quickly adapt and steer the ship in the right direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump, it seems, has not earned much forgiveness. After denying the severity of the outbreak well into March, Trump looked as though he was beginning to change course. But then he reversed once again. He began saying that the cure of social distancing was&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/coronavirus-covid19\/2020\/3\/27\/21193879\/coronavirus-covid-19-social-distancing-economy-recession-depression\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cworse than the problem itself,\u201d<\/a>&nbsp;claiming the country would reopen by Easter, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/2020\/3\/26\/21193912\/trump-hydroxychloroquine-coronavirus-treatment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">endorsing unproven (and possibly dangerous) therapeutics<\/a>.
