Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday admitted<\/a> that the country had a shortage of critical personal protective equipment for health care workers, and warned that the worst the pandemic is yet to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAhead of us is a new stage, perhaps the most intense stage of the fight against the epidemic,\u201d he said in a national address<\/a>, in which he also announced an extension of his nation\u2019s lockdown until May 11. \u201cThe risks of getting infected are at the highest level, and the threat, the mortal danger of the virus persists.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cRussia has managed to slow down the spread of the epidemic, but we haven\u2019t passed the peak yet,\u201d Putin continued<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His pessimism is warranted. Hospitals have become overrun with patients<\/a>, leaving ambulances stuck idling in long lines outside hospitals just to deliver sick patients. At least one driver had to wait about 15 hours<\/a>. Moscow might run out of intensive care unit beds<\/a> before the end of this week.
