That\u2019s nearly double the roughly 150,000 daily tests performed in early April, although it still falls short of the number of new tests a day experts say is needed to fully control the outbreak \u2014 a number that ranges from 500,000 on the low end to tens of millions on the high end, depending on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/2020\/4\/14\/21218074\/coronavirus-plans-social-distancing-end-reopen-economy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">which plan you\u2019re reading<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Over much of April, testing numbers stagnated due to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/2020\/5\/1\/21242589\/coronavirus-testing-swab-reagent-supply-shortage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">supply shortages<\/a>&nbsp;for swabs, reagents, and other materials needed to collect samples and run coronavirus tests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Experts&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/2020\/5\/1\/21242589\/coronavirus-testing-swab-reagent-supply-shortage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">have said<\/a>&nbsp;that the federal government, led by President Donald Trump, should lead national efforts to boost testing.
