At a time when U.S. President Donald Trump has tarnished the national brand in the eyes of many in Europe, activists took cues and borrowed slogans from a civil rights movement that has inspired people on both sides of the Atlantic for decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Belgium,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/thousands-protest-racism-in-brussels-as-us-black-lives-matter-movement-sweeps-europe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">some 10,000 people<\/a>&nbsp;gathered in front of Brussels\u2019 Palais de Justice for a protest organized by the Belgian Network for Black Lives. In a sea of hand-drawn \u201cBlack Lives Matter\u201d and \u201cNo justice, no peace\u201d placards, people held up signs calling out the country&#8217;s history of racism \u2014 \u201cBelgium, too\u201d and \u201cWe need to talk about Leopold II and Belgian colonies\u201d \u2014 and the names of recent victims of police violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/french-demonstration-draws-parallel-to-george-floyd-protests-adama-traore\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">planned protest<\/a>&nbsp;last week organized by families of victims of police brutality in France \u2014 including Adama Traor\u00e9, a 24-year-old black man who died in police custody in 2016 \u2014 drew record numbers of people in Paris. In cities across Germany, Spain, the U.K. and the Netherlands, protesters also flouted lockdown rules to flood public squares to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/news\/world\/europe\/protesters-highlight-deaths-in-police-custody-throughout-europe-1.4272985\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">demand justice<\/a>&nbsp;for the people of color who died in police custody in their own countries. They filled streets in Dublin, Copenhagen and Milan. In Bristol, in the U.K., protesters&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/how-a-slave-trade-statue-highlights-divided-britain-black-lives-matter-protests-bristol-london\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tore down<\/a>&nbsp;the statue of a 17th-century slave trader, dragged it through the streets and threw it in the harbor.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Europe\u2019s history with race relations is so different from that of the U.S. There was no large-scale system of slavery in modern Europe; it largely \u201cexported\u201d its racism to its colonies, which it plundered for wealth and cheap labor. Most migration from Africa to Europe is relatively recent, starting in the 1960s. In most European countries, there are people who remember when large numbers of migrants first arrived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Colonialism is still a touchy subject in a number of countries, particularly in France and Belgium, which have largely failed to grapple with their bloody legacies. There is a \u201cselective amnesia\u201d in Europe about its imperial legacy and a \u201ctoxic nostalgia that to this day taints their misunderstanding of that history,&#8221; the British journalist Gary Younge&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nybooks.com\/daily\/2020\/06\/06\/what-black-america-means-to-europe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote in a piece<\/a>&nbsp;for the New York Review of Books.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;<strong>Although most of Europe, unlike the U.S.<\/strong>, has never put in place a system of legal discrimination explicitly targeting people of color, like the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jim_Crow_laws\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jim Crow laws<\/a>, the daily racism experienced by Europeans is no less shocking. In some cases, it\u2019s more so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLevels of incarceration, unemployment, deprivation and poverty are all higher for black Europeans,\u201d according to Younge. \u201cPerhaps only because the Continent is not blighted by the gun culture of the U.S., racism here is less lethal.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Being a black or brown person in Europe means being confronted from a young age with teachings that paint colonialism as a worthy enterprise. It means you\u2019re more likely to live in poorer, heavily policed neighborhoods. It means your job applications will often&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/2020\/02\/07\/french-corporations-accused-of-racial-discrimination-against-north-african-job-applicants\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">go unanswered<\/a>&nbsp;and you will have&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/fra.europa.eu\/en\/news\/2018\/being-black-eu-often-means-racism-poor-housing-and-poor-jobs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a hard time<\/a>&nbsp;renting property or buying a house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You\u2019ll have seen people black up their faces and dress up as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/yasserlouati\/status\/1268593523793723392?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Zwarte Piet<\/a>&nbsp;every year&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/black-pete-european-schools-grapple-with-racism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">in early December<\/a>. You\u2019ll have watched far-right parties rise in the polls on openly racist platforms and loose language comparing migrants to vermin. You\u2019ll have seen footage of football fans throwing&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/sport\/football\/46504433\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">banana skins<\/a>&nbsp;at black players.
