It\u2019s an approach that\u2019s only illustrated how quick police can be to use violent tactics,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.buzzfeednews.com\/article\/clarissajanlim\/videos-police-arrest-peaceful-black-protesters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">particularly against black individuals<\/a>.&#8221;<br>&#8230;<br>&#8220;Vox spoke with 10 protesters in seven different cities \u2014 and nearly all of them had either directly witnessed or been subject to police violence while participating in marches and rallies in recent weeks.&#8221;<br>&#8230;<br>&#8220;During a peaceful protest in Toledo, Ohio, 29-year-old attorney Matthew Ahn saw police&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wtol.com\/article\/news\/local\/tpd-investigating-incident-where-woman-claims-police-shot-her-with-wooden-bullet-during-protest\/512-c9a75b6c-4b63-4587-91f1-44397a495126\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">shooting wooden bullets<\/a>&nbsp;directly at people\u2019s bodies, severely injuring at least two individuals.&#8221;&nbsp;<br>&#8230;<br>&#8220;In Los Angeles, Abdullah described watching a state highway patrol car plow into a crowd of protesters and knock a man out in the process.&#8221;<br>&#8230;<br>&#8220;Such acts of police violence have contributed to a number of injuries \u2014&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/fox59.com\/news\/national-world\/woman-plans-lawsuit-after-she-says-police-fired-rubber-bullet-that-left-her-blind-in-one-eye\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rubber bullets<\/a>&nbsp;have blinded multiple individuals,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2020-06-11\/lapd-violated-protocols-for-batons-and-less-lethal-bullets-injuring-many-protesters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">while beatings have resulted in broken bones<\/a>&nbsp;\u2014 and one death. In Louisville, Kentucky, where officers still haven\u2019t been charged in the shooting death of Breonna Taylor,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/2020\/6\/1\/21276706\/louisville-kentucky-protests-breonna-taylor-george-floyd-police\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">police shot and killed David McAtee<\/a>&nbsp;near his business when he was out past curfew in early June.&#8221;&nbsp;&nbsp;<br>&#8230;<br>&#8220;At the marches where law enforcement has taken a more aggressive approach, the escalation by police often came with little warning, protesters say. It can be chaotic, frightening, and overwhelming.&#8221;<br>&#8230;<br>&#8220;There is legal recourse for protesters who have suffered injuries at the hands of police, but there have historically been some pretty big obstacles to getting accountability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Such barriers are largely due to the protections that police have in the case of civil lawsuits because of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/2020\/6\/3\/21277104\/qualified-immunity-cops-constitution-shaniz-west-supreme-court\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a legal doctrine known as qualified immunity<\/a>: In order to even go to trial with an allegation of police misconduct, an individual needs to show not only that it was a violation of their civil rights, but also that there\u2019s precedent for that same action being considered unlawful in prior cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This shield has enabled police officers to avoid liability on many acts of misconduct in the past, including&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/investigates\/special-report\/usa-police-immunity-scotus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">shootings<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pressherald.com\/2020\/06\/11\/commentary-no-one-is-above-the-law-end-qualified-immunity-for-police\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">theft<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/2020\/6\/3\/21277104\/qualified-immunity-cops-constitution-shaniz-west-supreme-court\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">property damage<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still, experts tell Vox that protesters have plenty of grounds to pursue legal action \u2014 and already, there\u2019s been multiple cases in the last month where the officer involved faces criminal charges.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Protesters have three avenues they can take, Futterman notes: They can file a civil lawsuit against a specific officer for violating their constitutional rights, they can register a complaint with the city or police station involved, or they can report the incident to a district attorney, who could then file a criminal lawsuit.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/2020\/6\/12\/21279619\/protesters-police-violence-philadelphia-los-angeles-washington-dc\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/www.vox.com\/2020\/6\/12\/21279619\/protesters-police-violence-philadelphia-los-angeles-washington-dc<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;At demonstration after demonstration, officers have met peaceful protesters, who are condemning the police killing of George Floyd \u2014 and police violence more broadly \u2014 with disproportionate and brutal force, often for no reason but to \u201cdisperse\u201d a crowd.
