All of these disproportionately impact Black women \u2014 Black Americans, for example, are&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/minorityhealth.hhs.gov\/omh\/browse.aspx?lvl=4&amp;lvlid=18\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">60 percent more likely<\/a>&nbsp;than whites to be diagnosed with diabetes. And&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/disparities-policy\/issue-brief\/changes-in-health-coverage-by-race-and-ethnicity-since-the-aca-2010-2018\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">11.5 percent of Black Americans were uninsured<\/a>&nbsp;as of 2018, compared with just 7.5 percent of whites.&#8221;&nbsp;<br>&#8230;<br>&#8220;For Black women, \u201ceven when we get prenatal care,\u201d Crear-Perry explained, \u201ceven when we are normal weight and not obese, even when we have no underlying medical conditions, we are still more likely to die in childbirth than our white counterparts.\u201d In New York City, for example, a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.propublica.org\/article\/nothing-protects-black-women-from-dying-in-pregnancy-and-childbirth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2016 study<\/a>&nbsp;found that Black patients with a college education were more likely to have pregnancy or childbirth complications than white patients who hadn\u2019t graduated from high school.&#8221;&nbsp;&nbsp;<br>&#8230;<br>&#8220;Part of the issue is that providers treat Black patients differently from white ones. Black women and other women of color often aren\u2019t listened to when they express pain or discomfort, Jamila Taylor, director of health care reform at the Century Foundation, told Vox.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Racist beliefs about people\u2019s bodies and their ability to experience pain are shockingly widespread: Half of the white medical students and residents surveyed in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/health\/is-bias-keeping-female-minority-patients-from-getting-proper-care-for-their-pain\/2019\/07\/26\/9d1b3a78-a810-11e9-9214-246e594de5d5_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">one 2016 study<\/a>, for example, believed at least one myth about racial differences in pain perception, such as the idea that Black people\u2019s nerve endings are less sensitive than white people\u2019s.
