{"id":3408,"date":"2020-09-09T18:54:28","date_gmt":"2020-09-09T18:54:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lonecandle.com\/?p=3408"},"modified":"2020-09-09T18:54:28","modified_gmt":"2020-09-09T18:54:28","slug":"california-police-unions-once-again-side-with-bad-cops-to-kill-a-good-bill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lonecandle.com\/?p=3408","title":{"rendered":"California Police Unions Once Again Side With Bad Cops To Kill a Good Bill"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>\n\n&#8220;California is one of only five states that does not have a formal process for decertifying bad cops to keep them from finding patrol work.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/8ac83465b2d47717b6cf38765968afd7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">And it looks like it&#8217;s going to stay that way<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the middle of a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/reason.com\/2020\/06\/05\/5-ways-to-curtail-police-violence-and-prevent-more-deaths-like-george-floyds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">massive push for policing reforms<\/a>&nbsp;in America, law enforcement unions have defeated&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billTextClient.xhtml?bill_id=201920200SB731\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">S.B. 731,<\/a>&nbsp;a California bill that would have created a commission to hear cases of cops who have engaged in misconduct and determine whether they&#8217;d be stripped of their certifications.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Several law enforcement unions in the state say they want a process in place to decertify bad cops. They even&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investinpolicing.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">made a web page<\/a>&nbsp;to insist that they support things like a database of officers who have been fired for misconduct, and &#8220;a fair, reasonable and workable decertification process.&#8221; But they object to Bradford&#8217;s commission because only three of the nine members would be police officers. Four of the other members would be members of nonprofit or academic institutions and community-based organizations that have experience on &#8220;issues related to police misconduct.&#8221; One member would be a citizen who has been a survivor of police misconduct (or a relative of somebody who did not survive misconduct). And one would be an attorney with &#8220;experience involving oversight of police officers.&#8221; Police unions determined that this newly created board would be, in the Associated Press&#8217;s words, &#8220;inherently biased against officers.&#8221;&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The cops and the unions want too much control over what is and is not considered &#8220;misconduct.&#8221; Time and again, Americans have seen these organizations use their power to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/reason.com\/2018\/09\/20\/jon-burge-chicagos-most-famous-corrupt-c\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">defend<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/reason.com\/2019\/09\/04\/new-york-cops-protest-pantaleos-firing-by-hassling-fewer-people-crime-is-still-going-down\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">make excuses<\/a>&nbsp;for terrible police behavior.
