That certainly sounds scary, but the assessment actually offers a broadly reassuring message: Despite these expected advances, the US will remain the far stronger nuclear force well into the future.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8230;<br>&#8220;\u201cOver the next decade, China\u2019s nuclear warhead stockpile \u2014 currently estimated to be in the low 200s \u2014 is projected to at least double in size as China expands and modernizes its nuclear forces,\u201d the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/media.defense.gov\/2020\/Sep\/01\/2002488689\/-1\/-1\/1\/2020-DOD-CHINA-MILITARY-POWER-REPORT-FINAL.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">report<\/a>&nbsp;says.&#8221;<br>&nbsp;&#8230;<br>&#8220;\u201cThe US nuclear stockpile numbers about&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/armscontrolcenter.org\/fact-sheet-the-united-states-nuclear-arsenal\/#:~:text=The%20United%20States'%20total%20nuclear,2%2C000%20retired%20warheads%20awaiting%20dismantlement.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">3,800 [active] warheads<\/a>. As Acton told me, China still has enough warheads, and long-range missiles to place them on, \u201cto destroy the US as a functioning society.\u201d And other government reports make clear&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/world\/2018\/11\/14\/18091800\/china-military-power-congress-commission-report-2050\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">China\u2019s military prowess could match America\u2019s in just 30 years<\/a>.
