Brian Charles&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/identities\/2019\/8\/19\/20812238\/1619-project-slavery-conservatives\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a>&nbsp;for Vox, \u201cmarks the 400th anniversary of the arrival of African slaves to Virginia\u201d by seeking \u201cto reframe the country\u2019s thinking about slavery and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/identities\/2019\/8\/16\/20806069\/slavery-economy-capitalism-violence-cotton-edward-baptist\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>how intertwined the practice of slavery has been in shaping the nation<\/strong><\/a>.\u201d (Trump\u2019s \u201c1776 Commission\u201d is meant to allude to the 1619 Project, which Trump has railed against.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even after slavery was abolished, Jim Crow laws made Black people second-class citizens in much of the country. Today, Black Americans have to deal with voter suppression efforts aimed at making it difficult to them to vote in areas where&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/2019\/1\/24\/18186741\/voter-suppression-gerrymandering-carol-anderson\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">their votes threaten Republican control<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This legacy of racism has tangible consequences. Black Americans have&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4984780\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lower life expectancies<\/a>&nbsp;and make less than whites, even adjusted for education. (And adjusting for education is important, because in this area as well&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/articles\/unequal-opportunity-race-and-education\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Blacks fare worse than whites<\/a>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;Black Americans are also far more likely, per capita, to be&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/black-people-are-up-to-6-times-more-likely-to-be-killed-by-police-harvard-study-says-2020-06-26\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">victims of police violence than White Americans<\/a>. This disparity in particular became a major topic of public attention this summer as protests erupted following the police killings of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd, and more recently the shooting of Jacob Blake.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But instead of even paying lip service to structural racism, Trump has consistently denied that such a thing exists. In a July interview with CBS, for instance, Trump responded to a straightforward question about why he thinks Black people continue to be killed by police by lashing out \u2014 at the questioner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnd so are white people.
