It\u2019s less clear now if the bonhomie stems from their diplomatic relationships or because they lead nations that are lucrative for the president.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Turkey is perhaps the best example of this conundrum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump said last year that he was a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/world\/2019\/11\/13\/20963736\/trump-turkey-erdogan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">big fan of<\/a>\u201d President Recep Tayyip Erdo\u011fan, but their relationship hit&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/world\/2019\/4\/11\/18292070\/usa-turkey-trump-erdogan-s400\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">some snags<\/a>&nbsp;over Ankara\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/videos\/2019\/10\/31\/20942077\/turkey-syria-invasion-erdogan-kurds-isis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">attacks on US allies in Syria<\/a>&nbsp;and its&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/2018\/7\/26\/17617366\/trump-turkey-brunson-sanctions-tweet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">unlawful imprisonment of an American pastor<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When US-Turkey ties were low, the Times recalled a few curiosities:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;[In 2018,] a Turkish business group&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Politics\/turkish-group-froze-plans-lavish-trump-hotel-event\/story?id=58744546\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">canceled<\/a>&nbsp;a conference at Mr. Trump\u2019s Washington hotel; six months later, when the two countries were on better terms, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizensforethics.org\/turkish-interest-group-event-kicks-off-at-trump-hotel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rescheduled event<\/a>&nbsp;was attended by Turkish government officials. Turkish Airlines also chose the Trump National Golf Club in suburban Virginia to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/sunlightfoundation.com\/2017\/09\/24\/turkish-airlines-golf-event-at-trump-golf-course-tees-off-emolumental-problems\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">host an event [in 2017]<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, countries like Turkey can potentially find ways to Trump\u2019s heart by ensuring money goes into his family\u2019s pocket in hopes of altering US foreign policy. The Trump Organization, then, gives nations an unprecedented extra leverage point to influence an American president.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;If the president makes decisions based on his private interests, and not the public\u2019s, then he\u2019s subjugating the demands of US foreign policy for the bottom line of his family\u2019s business.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;That issue becomes more acute when you factor in Trump\u2019s\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2020\/09\/27\/us\/donald-trump-taxes.html\" target=\"_blank\">$421 million in debt<\/a>, much of it owed in the next four years.
