Modi and members of his party believe these reforms will help India&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hindustantimes.com\/india-news\/the-farm-bills-passed-in-parliament-will-not-only-bring-radical-changes-in-agriculture-sector-but-will-also-empower-farmers-tweets-pm-modi\/story-Wsi1df81nxjXQFeAHXPVtI.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">modernize and improve its farming industry<\/a>, which will mean greater freedom and prosperity for farmers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the protesting farmers aren\u2019t convinced.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Agriculture plays a crucial role in the Indian economy, as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibef.org\/industry\/agriculture-india.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">nearly 60 percent of India\u2019s 1.3 billion people<\/a>&nbsp;depend on farming for their livelihoods. But farming is also incredibly unproductive, as the sector accounts for only about&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/india\/for-the-first-time-farm-sector-set-to-grow-even-as-gdp-sees-a-contraction-6567182\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">15 percent<\/a>&nbsp;of India\u2019s GDP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By allowing farmers to sell to whomever they want, the government hopes to attract private business to agriculture, which will benefit some farmers.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The problem, Dhume explained, is that there are simply too many farmers in India. He and others have argued thatthe country should make a similar transition away from farming to manufacturing, like China did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But so far, India has not been able to generate the kind of manufacturing growth needed to support millions of farmers in their transition to new work. Manufacturing accounted for only about&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/industries\/advanced-electronics\/our-insights\/a-new-growth-formula-for-manufacturing-in-india\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">17 percent of India\u2019s GDP in 2020<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Dhume said, \u201cIf the economy were creating jobs, then there wouldn\u2019t be as much anxiety.
