Bannon was awaiting trial on fraud charges \u2014 specifically, he was&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/2020\/8\/20\/21377209\/bannon-arrested-indicted-build-border-wall-gofundme\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">charged with<\/a>&nbsp;defrauding donors to a crowdfunding campaign promising to build a wall on the US-Mexico border. Yes, that means Trump pardoned Bannon for allegedly defrauding Trump\u2019s own supporters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The clemency grant list&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefings-statements\/statement-press-secretary-regarding-executive-grants-clemency-012021\/?utm_source=link&amp;utm_medium=header\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">released by the White House<\/a>&nbsp;early Wednesday morning also included Elliott Broidy, a wealthy Republican donor, lobbyist, and former RNC finance committee member who had&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/pr\/elliott-broidy-pleads-guilty-back-channel-lobbying-campaign-drop-1mdb-investigation-and\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pleaded guilty<\/a>&nbsp;to violating the Foreign Agents Registration Act in October. It included three former Republican members of Congress and a former&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.minnpost.com\/christian-science-monitor\/2013\/10\/kwame-kilpatrick-disgraced-detroit-mayor-gets-massive-28-year-sent\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Democratic mayor of Detroit<\/a>, all of whom were charged with corruption crimes. Celebrity rappers&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nola.com\/entertainment_life\/keith_spera\/article_8a6befb6-5a80-11eb-88ab-d7d644c36976.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lil Wayne<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/music\/story\/2021-01-11\/lil-wayne-kodak-black-trump-pardon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kodak Black<\/a>&nbsp;also made the cut, as did dozens of lesser-known people (including some who seem to have&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/chrisgeidner\/status\/1351777906079490050\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">genuinely<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/chrisgeidner\/status\/1351780183091666946\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">deserved<\/a>&nbsp;clemency).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump has now pardoned two of his campaign chiefs (the other being Paul Manafort), in addition to his first national security adviser (Michael Flynn), his longtime political guru (Roger Stone), and the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/trump-duncan-hunter-chris-collins-indictments_n_5b7caf60e4b07295150dd6cb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">first two members of Congress<\/a>&nbsp;to endorse his 2016 campaign (former Reps. Chris Collins and Duncan Hunter).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In recent months, Trump considered going even further \u2014 he mused about offering \u201cpreemptive pardons\u201d to people who haven\u2019t even been charged with crimes, like his attorney Rudy Giuliani and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/12\/01\/us\/politics\/rudy-giuliani-pardon.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">several of his children<\/a>, as well as a dubiously legal \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/22237079\/trump-100-presidential-pardons-clemency\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">self-pardon<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These haven\u2019t materialized.
