\n\n“As CNN<\/a> and other outlets have reported previously \u2014 and pro-impeachment Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler (R-WA) confirmed<\/a> in a statement in February \u2014 McCarthy spoke with Trump while the riots were still ongoing and pleaded with Trump to call his supporters off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Herrera Beutler, Trump \u201cinitially repeated the falsehood that it was antifa that had breached the Capitol\u201d on the call with McCarthy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Subsequently, Herrera Beutler said in her February statement, \u201cMcCarthy refuted that and told the president that these were Trump supporters. That\u2019s when, according to McCarthy, the president said: \u2018Well, Kevin, I guess these people are more upset about the election than you are.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other Republicans have corroborated Trump\u2019s state of mind as the attack was unfolding. According to Sen. Ben Sasse (R-NE)<\/a>, \u201cDonald Trump was walking around the White House confused about why other people on his team weren\u2019t as excited as he was as you had rioters pushing against Capitol Police trying to get into the building.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If McCarthy is called upon to substantiate Herrera Beutler\u2019s account of the McCarthy-Trump call for the commission, however, it would likely also put McCarthy in an awkward position politically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s because McCarthy\u2019s call with Trump \u2014 which\u00a0reportedly<\/a>\u00a0took place as rioters were attempting to break through the minority leader\u2019s office windows \u2014 is a reminder of the true severity of the January 6 attacks, and of Trump\u2019s support for the mob, who he\u00a0described<\/a>\u00a0as \u201cvery special\u201d in a video later the same day. It\u2019s also increasingly out of step with a Republican conference eager to\u00a0downplay<\/a>\u00a0the insurrection and a former president who is hypersensitive to criticism \u2014 and it\u2019s hard to imagine McCarthy looking forward to giving a faithful retelling of January 6 to a potential commission.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
