And because our neighborhoods are so segregated, our social networks are also siloed \u2014 about\u00a0three-quarters of white Americans\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/wonk\/wp\/2014\/08\/25\/three-quarters-of-whites-dont-have-any-non-white-friends\/\" target=\"_blank\">don\u2019t have any nonwhite friends<\/a>, according to a 2014 survey from PRRI. The nature of segregation in the U.S. means that we only end up seeingand learning about what our own groups experience, making it hard to understand the lives of people outside of our own group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>This explains, in part, why Americans have such a hard time understanding just\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hbs.edu\/ris\/Publication%20Files\/Norton_Michael_Building%20a%20better%20America%20One%20wealth%20quintile%20at%20a%20time_4c575dff-fe1d-4002-b61a-1227d08b71be.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">how unequal<\/a>\u00a0our nation is, and moreover, the\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/10.1177\/0003122418822335\" target=\"_blank\"><em>racialized<\/em>\u00a0nature of that inequality<\/a>.
