The advisory, released jointly by the departments of State, Treasury, Commerce, and Homeland Security, was basically a giant red flag cautioning companies and investors against the complications that are emerging&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/2020\/7\/2\/21309902\/china-national-security-law-hong-kong-protests-us-sanctions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">under China\u2019s national security law<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>China imposed the sweeping legislation a little more than a year ago. It has since&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/22247655\/hong-kong-democracy-activist-joey-siu-china-national-security-law\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">stifled<\/a>&nbsp;Hong Kong\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/world\/2019\/8\/22\/20804294\/hong-kong-protests-9-questions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pro-democracy movement<\/a>&nbsp;and undermined its&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-asia-blinken-china-hongkong\/blinken-says-report-shows-china-undermined-hong-kongs-electoral-system-idUSKBN2B90BA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">autonomy<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/22554120\/hong-kong-national-security-law-tong-ying-kit-trial\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rule of law<\/a>, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/international\/archive\/2021\/07\/end-free-speech-hong-kong\/619577\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">free speech<\/a>&nbsp;traditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This tenuous political climate has shaken Hong Kong, but it has not yet upended its status as a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-07-26\/a-year-after-security-law-hong-kong-finance-hub-status-endures?sref=6ZE6q2XR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">global financial capital<\/a>. The United States\u2019s advisory is recognition that this might change as China continues its crackdown in the territory. International businesses \u2014 and their employees \u2014 could soon find themselves entangled in national security law enforcement.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;China, for its part, is banking that Hong Kong\u2019s infrastructure and economic climate will still make it a destination for foreign businesses in Asia despite the crackdown.
