And Fox News covered the incident as it was ongoing earlier in the day. But Ibanez\u2019s claim about motive bears more scrutiny.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s true that after the bomb threat suspect \u2014 later identified as 49-year-old Floyd Ray Roseberry, of Grover, North Carolina \u2014 surrendered to law enforcement, police&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2021\/08\/19\/1029275390\/bomb-threat-near-capitol-library-of-congress\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>&nbsp;\u201cwe don\u2019t know what his motives are at this time.\u201d (Fox News didn\u2019t immediately respond to an inquiry from Vox asking the network to explain Ibanez\u2019s \u201cno word on a possible motive\u201d report.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Ibanez\u2019s comment may have been intended to obscure an uncomfortable truth for America\u2019s most-watched cable news network. Unlike you,\u201d Roseberry added. \u201cThis ain\u2019t about politics. I don\u2019t care if Donald Trump ever becomes president again. I think y\u2019all Democrats need to step down. Y\u2019all need to understand people don\u2019t want you there.\u201d&#8221;&nbsp;&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Facebook eventually removed Roseberry\u2019s profile, but not before his videos were widely watched and summarized in media reports. Yet if you\u2019d watched Fox News Thursday night, you\u2019d have no idea those videos existed.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This isn\u2019t the first time in recent years a violent right-wing extremist has been motivated by the same sort of incendiary rhetoric that the network traffics in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;In October 2018, social media posts from the lone suspect in a shooting that killed 11 people at a synagogue in Pittsburgh indicated he was motivated by conspiracy theories about migrant caravans to the southern border representing an \u201cinvasion\u201d of the country, conspiracy theories that continued to receive play on the network&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.thinkprogress.org\/fox-news-invasion-migrant-caravan-robert-bowers-4850831b6bd4\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">even in the days immediately following the shooting<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That same month, Fox News&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/slate.com\/news-and-politics\/2018\/10\/cesar-sayoc-fox-news-trump-fanaticism.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">strained to avoid acknowledging<\/a>&nbsp;the right-wing fanaticism that inspired a man to send explosive devices to CNN and other perceived enemies of then-President Trump<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hammering people with lies about Democrats stealing elections and overseeing an immigrant invasion of the country can have deadly consequences.
