They, just like the first patient, will now have to travel hundreds or even thousands of miles in order to end their pregnancies \u2014 if they can get together the money, time off work, and child care necessary to do so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is what it looks like to try to get an abortion in Texas since the passage of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/2021\/8\/31\/22650303\/supreme-court-abortion-texas-sb8-jackson-roe-wade-greg-abbott\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SB 8, a law that bans nearly all abortions<\/a>&nbsp;after&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/22444100\/texas-bans-abortion-6-weeks-supreme-court\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">six weeks<\/a>, before many people know they are pregnant. For the few patients who do realize it in time, it\u2019s a race against the clock to schedule an appointment and get the money for the procedure \u2014 which costs&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/janesdueprocess.org\/pregnancy-resources\/teen-pregnancy-abortion\/cost-of-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">an average of about $500<\/a>&nbsp;and typically isn\u2019t covered by insurance. \u201cThere\u2019s a sense of urgency that\u2019s causing a devastation among our callers,\u201d said Shae Ward, hotline program coordinator at the Lilith Fund, which funds abortions in Texas. \u201cThey just are like, \u2018If it\u2019s not done by then, I don\u2019t know what I\u2019m gonna do.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The options aren\u2019t good. While one Texas doctor, Alan Braid,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/courts_law\/texas-abortion-doctor-sued\/2021\/09\/20\/f5ab5c56-1a1c-11ec-bcb8-0cb135811007_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">has been vocalabout performing an abortion<\/a>&nbsp;in defiance of the new law, providers generally say they are complying. That means patients who aren\u2019t able to get an abortion before six weeks, or who don\u2019t realize they\u2019re pregnant before then, have to make what\u2019s often a multi-day journey to a clinic in Oklahoma, Kansas, or even as far away as Michigan or New Jersey.
