Civil society and protest leaders and the military ultimately reached&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/2019\/8\/19\/20812054\/sudan-power-sharing-deal-al-bashir-trial\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a power-sharing arrangement<\/a>&nbsp;that put both in charge of the country with the commitment of transitioning to full civilian rule, which would lead to a new constitution and elections in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[The]&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2021\/10\/26\/1049058158\/the-coup-in-sudan-could-threaten-u-s-influence-in-a-strategically-important-regi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">coup<\/a>&nbsp;has upended that entire endeavor, fracturing what was already a tenuous arrangement between the military and civilian factions and jeopardizing any gains made. Lt. Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, Sudan\u2019s top general, orchestrated the power grab,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2021\/10\/27\/sudan-prime-minister-military-coup\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">detaining the civilian prime minister Abdalla Hamdok<\/a>&nbsp;and other civilian leaders, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pri.org\/stories\/2021-10-28\/sudan-s-ousted-ambassador-us-says-resorting-gun-doesn-t-aid-revolution\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">firing ambassadors who resisted the takeover<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the coup also reignited resistance, as protesters returned to the streets in cities and towns across Sudan to denounce the military takeover.
