But the demonstrations have swiftly ballooned into a broader far-right movement, with some demonstrators waving&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/montreal.ctvnews.ca\/that-s-what-scares-me-quebec-mp-gives-impassioned-speech-condemning-confederate-flags-in-ottawa-protest-1.5765804\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Confederate<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/now\/nazi-flags-truckers-protest-152500396.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nazi flags<\/a>. Protester&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/politics\/trudeau-protest-1.6335086\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">demands include<\/a>&nbsp;an end to all Covid-19 restrictions in Canada and the resignation of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The demonstrators,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2022\/01\/31\/canada-ottawa-protests-trucker-coronavirus-vaccine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">which have included as many as 8,000 people at their peak<\/a>, have terrorized Ottawa: blockading streets, harassing citizens, forcing business closures, and honking their extremely loud horns all night. Ottawa police, who have proven some combination of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/americas\/ottawans-fed-up-with-trucker-blockade-blame-police-inaction-2022-02-03\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">unwilling<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2022\/02\/07\/world\/canada-trucker-protest\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">unable<\/a>&nbsp;to restore order, have even&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/02\/01\/americas\/canada-ottawa-protests-hate-incidents-hotline\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">set up a special hotline<\/a>&nbsp;to deal with a deluge of alleged hate crimes stemming from the protests. In the first week of February, it&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ottawapolice.ca\/Modules\/News\/index.aspx?newsId=0087e6b4-7217-44b3-b17c-124b273da999&amp;lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">received over 200 calls<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/02\/07\/1078861392\/ottawa-protest-state-of-emergency\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">declared a state of emergency<\/a>, and Trudeau\u2019s government has deployed hundreds of Royal Canadian Mounted Police to the protests. As the situation inOttawacontinues, the freedom convoy movement&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/02\/05\/americas\/canada-trucker-protest-covid-19\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">has expanded across the country<\/a>. Demonstrators have&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2022\/02\/10\/canada-freedom-convoy-alberta-ottawa-protests\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">shut down at least two border crossings<\/a>&nbsp;between Canada and the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But while the protests are generating a lot of noise and attention, the eruption actually points up a counterintuitive fact: The Canadian far right is weak and ineffectual, especially when it comes to pandemic restrictions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Canada\u2019s provinces have generally employed strict Covid-19 measures such as school mask mandates and vaccine passports, including during the recent omicron surge. They have enjoyed broad public support in doing so; even the strictest restrictions are less controversial in Canada than in the US. The current demonstration is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/leger360.com\/surveys\/legers-north-american-tracker-february-8-2022\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">quite unpopular<\/a>&nbsp;with the general public, divisive even inside the center-right Conservative party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This doesn\u2019t mean the movement will accomplish nothing. It has already&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2022\/02\/02\/canada-conservatives-erin-otoole-00004707\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">contributed to a revolt<\/a>&nbsp;against the Conservative party\u2019s leader and is serving as an important organizing node for far-rightists.
