He pointed out that NATO increased<\/a> its readiness levels for \u201call contingencies\u201d in response to Putin\u2019s speech, and with increased military buildup comes increased uncertainty. \u201cThat\u2019s the fog of war, so to speak,\u201d Kristensen said. \u201cOut of that can come twists and turns that take you down a path that you couldn\u2019t predict a week ago.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When asked about Putin\u2019s decision to place his nuclear forces on higher alert, Kristensen said, \u201cThere is nothing in Russia\u2019s stated public nuclear doctrine that justifies this.\u201d He added, \u201cPutin has now taken yet another step that unnecessarily escalates the situation to what appears to be a direct nuclear threat.\u201d”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
