When Putin speaks of \u201cde-Nazification\u201d and \u201cbringing [Ukrainians] to justice,\u201d this is exactly what he means.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The word \u201cdemilitarization\u201d hints at the real reasons he\u2019s willing to do this: that he wishes to end Ukraine\u2019s status as an independent sovereign state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Putin believes that Ukraine is an illegitimate country that exists on land that\u2019s historically and rightfully Russian. Zelensky\u2019s willingness to move away from Moscow and toward the West is, in Putin\u2019s mind, an attempt to legitimize the \u201cfalse\u201d regime in Kyiv. The existence of an anti-Russian regime in what he views as rightfully Russian territory populated by rightfully Russian people is unacceptable to him \u2014 so unacceptable that he is willing to wage a costly and bloody war over it.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n
