The ventilation systems on commercial aircraft, which mix outdoor air with air recycled through HEPA filters and limit airflow between rows, help explain why there were few outbreaks associated with commercial flights even before vaccines were available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The risk of contracting COVID-19 during air travel is low,&#8221; an October 2020&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jama\/fullarticle\/2771435\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">article<\/a>&nbsp;in&nbsp;<em>The Journal of the American Medical Association<\/em>&nbsp;noted. &#8220;Despite substantial numbers of travelers, the number of suspected and confirmed cases of in-flight COVID-19 transmission between passengers around the world appears small.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sebastian Hoehl, a researcher at the Institute for Medical Virology at Goethe University Frankfurt in Germany, concurred in an interview with&nbsp;<em>Scientific American<\/em>&nbsp;the following month.&nbsp;&#8220;An airplane cabin is probably one of the most secure conditions you can be in,&#8221; he&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/evaluating-covid-risk-on-planes-trains-and-automobiles2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">observed<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;On February 25, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/reason.com\/2022\/02\/25\/the-cdc-says-most-americans-can-take-their-masks-off\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">stopped<\/a>&nbsp;recommending general indoor masking in parts of the country it&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/prevent-getting-sick\/about-face-coverings.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rates<\/a>&nbsp;as &#8220;low&#8221; or &#8220;medium&#8221; risk, which as of last week&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/media\/releases\/2022\/s0311-COVID-19-Community-Levels.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">covered<\/a>&nbsp;more than 98 percent of the U.S. population.
