{"id":7712,"date":"2022-04-22T17:39:58","date_gmt":"2022-04-22T17:39:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lonecandle.com\/?p=7712"},"modified":"2022-04-22T17:39:58","modified_gmt":"2022-04-22T17:39:58","slug":"how-white-victimhood-fuels-republican-politics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lonecandle.com\/?p=7712","title":{"rendered":"How White Victimhood Fuels Republican Politics"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>\n\n&#8220;According to a 2021 survey by the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2021\/03\/18\/majorities-of-americans-see-at-least-some-discrimination-against-black-hispanic-and-asian-people-in-the-u-s\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pew Research Center<\/a>, for example, only 17 percent of Republican and Republican-leaning Americans said there is \u201ca lot\u201d of discrimination against Black people in today\u2019s society. That number rose to 26 percent when Republicans were asked whether they believed&nbsp;<em>white<\/em>&nbsp;people faced \u201ca lot\u201d of discrimination. And intense&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/fivethirtyeight.com\/features\/white-backlash-is-a-type-of-racial-reckoning-too\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">white racial resentment<\/a>&nbsp;remains present both among Trump\u2019s base and in our politics today. Case in point: Trump, who\u2019s a (<a href=\"https:\/\/fivethirtyeight.com\/features\/a-majority-of-republican-voters-actively-want-trump-to-run-for-president-again\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">very, very early<\/a>) favorite to win the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, is still hitting that same drum; during a recent political event, the former president went so far as to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/arizona-rally-trump-claims-covid-19-treatment-is-anti-white-people-2022-1\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">falsely claim<\/a>&nbsp;that white people were currently being discriminated against and sent to the \u201cback of the line\u201d when it came to receiving COVID-19 vaccines and treatment.&#8221;<br>&#8230;<br>&#8220;Trump is not the first white person to feel like a victim of discrimination or to make claims in that spirit. This phenomenon started long before him. But in the U.S., if we look at things like the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/fivethirtyeight.com\/features\/why-many-americans-dont-see-the-racial-wealth-gap\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">racial wealth gap<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/graphics\/2022-wells-fargo-black-home-loan-refinancing\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">mortgage denial rates<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/fivethirtyeight.com\/features\/why-fewer-black-americans-are-getting-the-covid-19-vaccine-no-its-not-hesitancy\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">COVID-19 vaccination and illness rates<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/fivethirtyeight.com\/features\/why-black-women-are-often-missing-from-conversations-about-police-violence\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">police violence rates<\/a>&nbsp;or myriad other data sets, we quickly see plenty of systemic biases against Black Americans and other minority groups (such as increasing&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/asian-america\/anti-asian-hate-crimes-increased-339-percent-nationwide-last-year-repo-rcna14282\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hate crimes against Asian Americans<\/a>). You can\u2019t, however, find such widespread evidence for anti-white discrimination.
