{"id":7961,"date":"2022-05-28T13:59:13","date_gmt":"2022-05-28T13:59:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lonecandle.com\/?p=7961"},"modified":"2022-05-28T13:59:13","modified_gmt":"2022-05-28T13:59:13","slug":"new-york-just-cost-democrats-their-big-redistricting-advantage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lonecandle.com\/?p=7961","title":{"rendered":"New York Just Cost Democrats Their Big Redistricting Advantage"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>\n\n&#8220;On Wednesday, the New York Court of Appeals&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nycourts.gov\/ctapps\/Decisions\/2022\/Apr22\/60opn22-Decision.pdf\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ruled<\/a>&nbsp;that the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/projects.fivethirtyeight.com\/redistricting-2022-maps\/new-york\/amended_democratic_proposal\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">congressional map<\/a>&nbsp;New York Democrats&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/news\/politics\/new-york-elections-government\/ny-state-legislative-map-approved-albany-20220203-o3zkwpbp4rc2dezqmlpicy2zra-story.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">enacted back in February<\/a>&nbsp;was a partisan gerrymander that violated the state constitution and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesunion.com\/state\/article\/Court-of-Appeals-throws-out-New-York-s-17127915.php\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tossed it to the curb<\/a>. The decision was a huge blow to Democrats, who until recently looked like they had gained enough seats nationally in redistricting to almost eliminate the Republican bias in the House of Representatives. But with the invalidation of New York\u2019s map, as well as Florida\u2019s recent passage of a congressional map that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/fivethirtyeight.com\/features\/the-extreme-bias-of-floridas-new-congressional-map\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">heavily favors the GOP<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/fivethirtyeight.com\/features\/new-york-just-cost-democrats-their-big-redistricting-advantage\/#fn-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a>&nbsp;the takeaways from the 2021-22 redistricting cycle are&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/fivethirtyeight.com\/features\/the-countless-confusing-sometimes-contradictory-takeaways-of-the-2021-22-redistricting-cycle\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">no longer so straightforward<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s because much of Democrats\u2019 national redistricting advantage&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/fivethirtyeight.com\/features\/new-yorks-proposed-congressional-map-is-heavily-biased-toward-democrats-will-it-pass\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">rested on their gerrymander in New York<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;There are still congressional maps that could get struck down in court, like&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/projects.fivethirtyeight.com\/redistricting-2022-maps\/florida\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Florida\u2019s<\/a>. And there are still states that have yet to finalize a map \u2014 like, oh yeah, New York!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In its decision, the New York Court of Appeals endorsed the idea that a neutral special master \u2014 essentially, an expert in drawing political maps \u2014 should draw New York\u2019s next congressional map.
