{"id":8116,"date":"2022-06-15T15:01:12","date_gmt":"2022-06-15T15:01:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lonecandle.com\/?p=8116"},"modified":"2022-06-15T15:01:12","modified_gmt":"2022-06-15T15:01:12","slug":"the-january-6-committee-calls-trump-out-for-his-scams","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lonecandle.com\/?p=8116","title":{"rendered":"The January 6 committee calls Trump out for his scams"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>\n\n&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/23163140\/january-6-history-congress-hearings\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">In the second January 6 hearing,<\/a>&nbsp;House lawmakers argued Monday that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/22420764\/liz-cheney-trump-republicans-democracy-2024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">former President Donald Trump not only engaged in the \u201cbig lie<\/a>\u201d \u2014 promoting the false narrative that the election was stolen from him \u2014 but also&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/politics\/watch-big-lie-about-elections-was-also-a-big-ripoff-jan-6-committee-members-says\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">what they dubbed the \u201cbig ripoff.\u201d<\/a>&nbsp;Effectively, they said, Trump conned his supporters into giving him $250 million to contest the election results, while actually funneling many of those funds elsewhere, including to a nonprofit led by former chief of staff Mark Meadows and to Trump\u2019s own hotels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe found evidence that the Trump campaign and its surrogates misled donors as to where their funds would go and what they would be used for,\u201d Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-CA) said in a closing statement for the hearing. \u201cSo not only was there the big lie, there was the big ripoff.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As video testimony from former Trump campaign officials revealed, small-dollar donors were bombarded with emails to donate to an official \u201cElection Defense Fund\u201d in the wake of the 2020 election. Those donors were told that fund was aimed at combating (nonexistent) election fraud. In reality, however, no such fund existed, according to the House committee investigating the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t believe there was actually a fund called the Election Defense Fund,\u201d Hanna Allred, a former Trump campaign staffer, testified to the committee. Ultimately, the fund was what another staffer categorized as a \u201cmarketing tactic\u201d to bring in more money, most of which did not go to election-related litigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, many of the funds were directed to a newly created Save America PAC, which has contributed millions to other pro-Trump groups.
