I take it to help control an autoimmune disorder. So do&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsarthritis.org\/patient-corner\/drug-information\/methotrexate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">about 60 percent of rheumatoid arthritis patients<\/a>. It is used to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/drugs\/2\/drug-3441\/methotrexate-anti-rheumatic-oral\/details\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">treat some cancers<\/a>, such as non-Hodgkin lymphoma. It also has at least one other important medical use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The drug is the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.acog.org\/womens-health\/faqs\/ectopic-pregnancy#:~:text=The%20most%20common%20drug%20used,removal%20of%20the%20fallopian%20tube.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">most common pharmaceutical treatment<\/a>&nbsp;for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/science-and-health\/23191865\/abortion-ban-medical-emergency-ectopic-pregnancy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ectopic pregnancies<\/a>, a life-threatening medical condition where a fertilized egg implants somewhere other than the uterus \u2014 typically a fallopian tube. If allowed to develop, this egg can eventually cause a rupture and massive internal bleeding. Methotrexate prevents embryonic cell growth, eventually terminating an ectopic pregnancy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And so many patients who take methotrexate say they have&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2022-07-11\/post-roe-many-autoimmune-patients-lose-access-to-gold-standard-drug\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">become the latest victims<\/a>&nbsp;of the Supreme Court\u2019s decision in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.supremecourt.gov\/opinions\/21pdf\/19-1392_6j37.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Dobbs v. Jackson Women\u2019s Health Organization<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;\u2014 the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/2022\/5\/3\/23055125\/roe-v-wade-abortion-rights-supreme-court-dobbs-v-jackson\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">decision overruling&nbsp;<em>Roe v. Wade<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s unclear how widespread this phenomenon is, though the problem is serious enough that the Arthritis Foundation put out a statement warning that \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.arthritis.org\/about-us\/news-and-updates\/new-barrier-to-methotrexate-for-arthritis-patients\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">arthritis patients who rely on methotrexate are reporting difficulty accessing it<\/a>,\u201d and that \u201cat least one state \u2014 Texas \u2014 allows pharmacists to refuse to fill prescriptions for misoprostol and methotrexate, which together can be used for medical abortions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In some cases, pharmacists are reportedly&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.medscape.com\/viewarticle\/977041\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reluctant to fill methotrexate prescriptions<\/a>&nbsp;in states where abortion is illegal, and doctors are similarly reluctant to prescribe it.
