So is the Netflix Chill."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>\n\n&#8220;The main idea behind AT&amp;T\u2019s acquisition of what was then-called Warner Media \u2014&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/2016\/10\/22\/13368204\/att-time-warner-86-billion-what-next\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">first announced in 2016<\/a>&nbsp;but&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/2018\/6\/12\/17454780\/att-time-warner-court-decision-read-full-media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">not finished until 2018<\/a>&nbsp;\u2014 was that the phone company could turn HBO into its own Netflix and that Wall Street would reward AT&amp;T for owning its own Netflix. So in 2021, when it became clear that investors didn\u2019t care about AT&amp;T\u2019s media foray, the company flipped a switch and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/recode\/2021\/5\/16\/22439154\/warner-media-discovery-hbo-max-att-streaming-netflix-merger\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dumped its entertainment assets to Discovery<\/a>, the cable TV programmer best known for reality shows like&nbsp;<em>90 Day Fianc<\/em>\u00e9.<br>&nbsp;But now Discovery has multiple problems. For starters, it has $53 billion in debt, much of it taken on with the Warner deal. Which means instead of spending aggressively to take on Netflix and Disney, it has to look under couch cushions for change, and David Zaslav, the CEO of the newly combined company, has promised Wall Street he\u2019ll find $3 billion in cost savings &#8230; somewhere.<br>But the bigger problem is one that everyone in streaming \u2014 including Netflix \u2014 is grappling with now: Wall Street no longer likes Netflix. Netflix\u2019s stock, which got as high as $700 last fall, is now down 50 percent because Netflix\u2019s 10-year record rocketship growth appears over: During the first six months of this year,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/2022\/7\/20\/23270633\/netflix-earnings-q2-2022-subscriber-content-spend-ads-peter-kafka-column\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">it actually&nbsp;<em>lost<\/em>&nbsp;subscribers<\/a>. So now Wall Street, which had encouraged media companies to adopt Netflix\u2019s growth-first, profits-maybe-later strategy, wants them to change course. (One important exemption from this: Amazon and Apple, which are tech companies dabbling in media, so they can basically spend whatever they want on programming: See&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/6205837\/the-rings-of-power-amazon-most-expensive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Amazon\u2019s&nbsp;<em>Rings Of Power<\/em>&nbsp;\u2014 a gazillion-dollar&nbsp;<em>Lord of the Rings<\/em>&nbsp;prequel<\/a>&nbsp;that is very much supposed to be Amazon\u2019s&nbsp;<em>Game of Thrones<\/em>.
