Businesses&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldbank.org\/en\/news\/press-release\/2022\/04\/07\/world-bank-survey-afghanistan-s-private-sector-hit-hard-by-political-crisis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">struggle to get materials<\/a>&nbsp;because of lack of access to bank accounts or foreign currency.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2022\/2\/21\/unicef-stipend-afghanistan-teachers-emergency-support#:~:text=The%20United%20Nations%20children's%20agency,governments%20on%20the%20Taliban%20administration.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Teachers<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/afghanistan-taliban-to-start-paying-public-employees\/a-59890589\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">government workers<\/a>&nbsp;weren\u2019t getting paid, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/asia-pacific\/taliban-start-paying-overdue-salaries-afghan-government-workers-2021-11-20\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">even if those salaries have resumed<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/05\/08\/world\/asia\/afghanistan-eid-taliban.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">incomes are lower<\/a>. People sell&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2021\/9\/13\/afghans-sell-possessions-amid-cash-crunch-pending-economic-crisis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">furniture and silverware for cash<\/a>. They also&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sigar.mil\/pdf\/quarterlyreports\/2022-04-30qr.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sell their kidneys<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is Afghanistan in the months after the Taliban&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/22627919\/afghanistan-taliban-kabul-ashraf-ghani\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">marched into Kabul<\/a>, the Afghan government&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/08\/15\/world\/asia\/afghanistan-taliban-kabul-surrender.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fell<\/a>, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/afghanistan-islamic-state-group-e10e038baea732dae879c11234507f81\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the United States withdrew<\/a>. America\u2019s 20-year war ended, but another crisis replaced it: economic collapse. This was brought on by the near-instant evaporation of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/u-s-spent-billions-on-afghanistan-and-failed-to-build-a-sustainable-economy-11632735001\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">billions of dollars<\/a>&nbsp;in foreign aid,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.csis.org\/analysis\/us-sanctions-squeeze-humanitarian-assistance-afghanistan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sanctions<\/a>&nbsp;on Taliban leaders, and the US\u2019s freezing of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-08-17\/u-s-freezes-nearly-9-5-billion-afghanistan-central-bank-assets#:~:text=The%20U.S.%20has%20frozen%20nearly,an%20administration%20official%20confirmed%20Tuesday.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Afghanistan\u2019s foreign currency reserves<\/a>. A&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/news\/dispatch\/afghanistan-has-become-the-worlds-largest-humanitarian-crisis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">severe drought<\/a>, the Taliban\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/show\/as-crisis-grips-afghanistan-the-taliban-tightens-their-draconian-rule\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">struggles to govern<\/a>, and now&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/business-61036715\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the global shocks from the Ukraine war<\/a>&nbsp;have pushed Afghanistan toward&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/news\/dispatch\/afghanistan-has-become-the-worlds-largest-humanitarian-crisis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">humanitarian catastrophe<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The Taliban are not changing. In March, in Qatar, the US planned to begin discussions with the Taliban about economic issues, including those frozen funds, but talks fell apart after the Taliban issued their decree stopping girls from attending&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/exclusive-us-officials-cancel-talks-with-taliban-over-bar-girls-education-state-2022-03-25\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">secondary school<\/a>. Those talks&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2022\/07\/21\/afghanistan-taliban-economy-reserves-central-bank-finance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">resumed this summer in Doha<\/a>, but Zawahiri\u2019s assassination in Kabul might sidetrack them once again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Taliban are content to blame the West, and especially the US, for Afghanistan\u2019s suffering \u2014 but their continued human rights violations and ideological extremism have kept Afghanistan cut off from the world. The Taliban continue to curtails women\u2019s rights, like barring girls from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/blog\/education-plus-development\/2022\/06\/21\/the-relationship-between-schooling-and-conflict-in-afghanistan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">attending school beyond sixth grade<\/a>&nbsp;after they promised they would allow it. The Taliban\u2019s restrictions on freedom of movement for women and girls, and on employment outside the home, have added to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrw.org\/news\/2022\/01\/18\/afghanistan-taliban-deprive-women-livelihoods-identity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">economic strain<\/a>, as they can\u2019t earn income or seek access to things like health care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Taliban have also continued to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2021\/09\/afghanistan-taliban-wasting-no-time-in-stamping-out-human-rights-says-new-briefing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">target civil society<\/a>.
