That&#8217;s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.piie.com\/research\/piie-charts\/us-china-trade-war-tariffs-date-chart\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">six times higher<\/a>&nbsp;than the average tariff on Chinese-made imports before Trump&#8217;s haphazard trade war began. That&#8217;s certainly not helping poorer Americans improve their standard of living.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, as Gresser points out, other aspects of the U.S. tariff code are also to blame for imposing regressive taxes on poorer Americans. Under the &#8220;Most Favored Nation&#8221; (MFN) system of tariffs that are applied to imports from countries with which the U.S. does not have a specific trade deal, many common consumer goods are subject to higher tariffs than their luxury alternatives. In June, administration officials&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/06\/14\/business\/economy\/biden-china-tariffs-inflation.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a>&nbsp;<em>The New York Times&nbsp;<\/em>that lifting tariffs might reduce inflation by a quarter of a percentage point\u2014even though&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.piie.com\/research\/piie-charts\/tariffs-chinese-imports-have-only-marginally-contributed-us-inflation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">independent studies<\/a>&nbsp;suggested the effect could be greater.
