After Begich was eliminated and his ballots were re-tallied, Peltola prevailed over Palin 51\u201349.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the days after Palin&#8217;s loss, prominent conservatives and Republicans criticized the new system for contributing to her defeat. After the results were announced, Sen. Tom Cotton (R\u2013Ark.)&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TomCottonAR\/status\/1565139540834222080?s=20&amp;t=5SaEnp0EGgpLZli8ibV8eg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tweeted<\/a>, &#8220;Ranked-choice voting is a scam to rig elections.&#8221; (Previously, he has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.armoneyandpolitics.com\/op-ed-ranked-choice-voting-is-a-scheme-to-rig-our-elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">referred<\/a>&nbsp;to it as a &#8220;radical scheme.&#8221;) Palin herself&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SarahPalinUSA\/status\/1565423307087757313?s=20&amp;t=3D93lhSyonGlHxZv8i5yRA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">called<\/a>&nbsp;the system an &#8220;experiment&#8221; that&#8217;s &#8220;crazy, convoluted,&#8221; and &#8220;confusing.&#8221; In&nbsp;<em>National Review<\/em>, Jim Geraghty&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/the-morning-jolt\/who-really-wins-under-ranked-choice-voting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">termed<\/a>it &#8220;a legitimate electoral system\u2026that doesn&#8217;t make sense.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it&#8217;s not ranked choice voting&#8217;s fault; Palin was simply a bad candidate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Geraghty complained that ranked choice voting was &#8220;more complicated&#8221; than &#8220;the familiar &#8216;first past the post&#8217; system,&#8221; that &#8220;the Democrats came out the big winner, even though their candidate finished fourth in the first round of voting.&#8221; This is true, though the third-place finalist, Al Gross,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.adn.com\/politics\/2022\/06\/20\/al-gross-withdraws-from-alaskas-us-house-campaign\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">withdrew<\/a>&nbsp;from the race after the June primary and encouraged his voters to support Peltola.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cotton&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TomCottonAR\/status\/1565139542000246784?s=20&amp;t=5SaEnp0EGgpLZli8ibV8eg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">complained<\/a>&nbsp;that even though &#8220;60% of Alaska voters voted for a Republican\u2026a Democrat &#8216;won.'&#8221; This is also true, though notably they did not all vote for the&nbsp;<em>same<\/em>&nbsp;Republican.
