After a slight increase, Americans\u2019 support of unions hit a low of 48 percent in 2009. The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/chart-union-membership-changes-decline-over-the-years-2022-9\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">share of private-sector workers in unions<\/a>&nbsp;also declined steadily since the 1980s. This was caused by a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/the-rise-and-fall-of-us-labor-unions-and-why-they-still-matter-38263\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">multitude of political and economic factors<\/a>&nbsp;\u2014 industrial deregulation, the rise of anti-union politicians, increasing globalization \u2014 but American workplaces also fundamentally changed.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/govbeat\/wp\/2014\/09\/03\/watch-the-u-s-transition-from-a-manufacturing-economy-to-a-service-economy-in-one-gif\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Employment opportunities moved<\/a>&nbsp;from traditionally organized workplaces, like factories, into a service industry where union density was already lower. Many workers unionizing today are making coffee instead of cars, and issues like high turnover and irregular worker schedules in those industries&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/full\/10.1177\/00197939211048484\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">led to job instability<\/a>.&#8221;<br>&#8230;<br>&#8220;Americans largely favor the kinds of worker protections and benefits unions fight for. In general, Americans&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bentley.edu\/files\/gallup\/Bentley-Gallup_Force_for_Good_Report_final.pdf\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">think businesses<\/a>&nbsp;should treat workers with respect, pay fair wages and provide health care benefits.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2021\/04\/22\/most-americans-support-a-15-federal-minimum-wage\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sixty-two percent of Americans support<\/a>&nbsp;a $15 federal minimum wage, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/today.yougov.com\/topics\/politics\/articles-reports\/2022\/12\/01\/most-americans-think-minimum-wage-is-too-low\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">three-quarters of Americans<\/a>&nbsp;think the current federal minimum wage, $7.25 an hour, is too low.
