Some critics of the agency go even further and claim these new agents will be armed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But fact-checkers have repeatedly&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/factcheck-irs-armed\/fact-check-the-irs-is-not-hiring-thousands-of-armed-agents-job-ads-show-opening-for-specialized-unit-idUSL1N2ZT296\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">debunked<\/a>&nbsp;the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politifact.com\/factchecks\/2022\/aug\/18\/facebook-posts\/video-misleads-about-size-irs-audits-and-armed-age\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">claims<\/a>, and the agency itself pushed back<a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/finance\/news\/irs-sets-the-record-straight-130049197.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&nbsp;in a Yahoo Finance op-ed from then-IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig<\/a>&nbsp;in August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The viral claims are \u201cabsolutely false,\u201d Rettig wrote at the time, adding his agency \u201cis often perceived as an easy target for mischaracterizations,\u201d but he promised the new money will not lead to increased audit scrutiny on households making under $400,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The plan is instead for much of the money to go toward wealthy tax cheats.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/newsroom\/the-tax-gap\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">IRS estimates<\/a>&nbsp;of the so-called \u201ctax gap\u201d \u2014 the difference between what taxes are owed to the government and what is actually paid \u2014 is hundreds of billions of dollars a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Much of the $80 billion will be focused on taking a bite out of the gap, focusing on wealthy tax payers.
