Earlier this year, he&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawley.senate.gov\/hawley-introduces-taiwan-weapons-exports-act\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">introduced legislation<\/a>&nbsp;to fast-track U.S. arms sales to Taipei. He&#8217;s also&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/projects.propublica.org\/represent\/votes\/116\/senate\/1\/179\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">repeatedly<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theamericanconservative.com\/hawleys-puzzling-foreign-policy-speech\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">voted<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.senate.gov\/legislative\/LIS\/roll_call_votes\/vote1171\/vote_117_1_00484.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">against<\/a>&nbsp;resolutions stopping weapons sales to Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states, and he likewise&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.senate.gov\/legislative\/LIS\/roll_call_votes\/vote1161\/vote_116_1_00048.htm#position\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">voted against<\/a>&nbsp;ending U.S. support for the Saudi-led intervention in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/reason.com\/2022\/06\/09\/why-arent-we-out-of-yemen-yet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Yemen&#8217;s civil war<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Similarly, Vance&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/7NwPfL3AWvM?t=1522\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">has suggested<\/a>&nbsp;that until semiconductor production is ramped up domestically, the U.S. would need to defend Taiwan against Chinese attack. Gaetz has a more mixed record\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/gaetz.house.gov\/media\/press-releases\/congressman-matt-gaetz-unveils-legislation-hold-saudi-arabia-accountable-3rd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">he&#8217;s willing<\/a>&nbsp;to cut off U.S. backing for Saudi Arabia in Yemen\u2014but he&#8217;s uniquely targeted Ukraine aid for slashing. Cutting aid to Israel&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/repmattgaetz\/status\/1110973818435239936?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">is certainly<\/a>&nbsp;off the table. Indeed, none of the representatives I&#8217;ve named here voted against&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/rollcall.com\/2021\/09\/23\/house-passes-israel-iron-dome-funding-with-some-democratic-defections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$1 billion in funding<\/a>&nbsp;for Israel&#8217;s Iron Dome last year, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hawleymo\/status\/1234968188703690754?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hawley<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/democrats\/ohio-dems-attack-republican-jd-vance-for-trip-to-israel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Vance<\/a>&nbsp;are as effusive in their pledges of support for Israel as congressional Republicans tend to be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fuller picture, then, doesn&#8217;t show a GOP pivot to America as &#8220;well-wisher to the freedom and independence of all&#8221;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/loveman.sdsu.edu\/docs\/1821secofstateJQAdmas.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">but<\/a>&nbsp;&#8220;champion and vindicator only of her own.&#8221; A better explanation is simple partisan reaction: Many Democrats believe Trump is in bed with Moscow and made investigating his alleged ties to the Kremlin a major theme of his four years in office. That has translated to a broader Democratic focus on Russia as the primary threat to the United States and, by extension, on Ukraine as a pseudo-ally particularly deserving of our support.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In response, some Republicans have\u2014well, not quite&nbsp;<em>embraced<\/em>&nbsp;Russia, but certainly deemphasized it as a security risk compared to what they likely would have said without the recent history of Russiagate. They&#8217;ve cast China as the primary threat instead and, by extension, made Taiwan the pseudo-ally deserving support.
